Community members of Hellberg Farm were met with an awful mishap after the storm that passed through Vryheid on Saturday.
According to one of the residents, they were in a taxi headed home from town after the storm when they came to a sudden halt at the dirt road just to the right-hand side of Grootgewacht Dam.
“The road was completely flooded,” said Sibongile Mthembu who was one of the commuters.
The taxi driver is said to have attempted to manoeuvre the vehicle through the “river” which had been formed but this only resulted in the vehicle becoming stuck in the middle.
“Water spewed into the taxi through the windows and seeped in through the floor,” recalled Sibongile.
“Many of us were very upset as it was the end of the month and we had all gone to town to do our monthly grocery shopping,” she continued.
The food was spoiled and commuters are said to have used the windows to exit the taxi.
They then tried to wade their way through the waist-deep water to safety.
Fortunately, no children were in the taxi.
