Michaelis School – Athletic achievements at Michaelis

ON TUESDAY, February 3, the Vryheid Regional Tennis Trials were held.

The following primary schools took part: Michaelis, LMS and Lüneburg. Nine boys and eleven girls respectively, attended these trials. We congratulate the following learners who have been selected to represent the Vryheid Region at the NKZN trials, which will take place in Dundee. Boys: Kyle Meier (Lüneburg); Norman Niebuhr (Lüneburg); Jens Eckhardt (Lüneburg) and Cameron Aitken (Michaelis). Girls: Marlie Smit (LMS); Michelle Meier (Lüneburg); Leah Vonkeman (Michaelis) and Awande Mbuli (Michaelis). Reserves: Dirk Grobler (LMS) and Anrie Janse van Rensburg (LMS). A special word of thanks goes to the parents and coaches who encourage the players to practice. Thank you to the Vryheid Lawn Tennis Club for allowing us to use your facilities on a regular basis. This really helps the players to get to know one another and to enjoy tennis as a sport.

Athletics meeting: On Friday, February 6, Michaelis held their annual Athletics Meeting. The morning got off to a colourful start with the teams doing their traditional march before the proud onlookers. This year the tiniest members of our school also joined us, holding up their Kindergarten flag. As always, they were also the first to run. Some completely overwhelmed by all the shouting and the people, others running with all their might, some slowly and cautiously taking a few steps forward with fingers in their mouths, others eager to take off. But whether slow or fast, overwhelmed or scared, it was all the same to their parents waiting at the finish, bursting with pride.

The seniors continued with field events and when those were complete the track events began. There was extra excitement in the air this year as Impala was not lagging behind as usual, but rather neck in neck with Duiker and even leading at times. This was going to be a momentous day as they had not sported a win since 2003! The children ran with all their might, they cheered and chanted and finally when it was all over, the Impalas were the ones beaming with pride! They had eventually done it and herewith broken the long cycle of not holding up the winners’ cup!

We would like to congratulate and applaud every single child that took part and gave it their all, but especially our Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum, Ethan Watson and Nthando Mthiyane and our Senior Victor and Victrix Ludorum, Muhammad Khan and Leah Vonkeman. Very well done to the four of you on a fantastic effort!

Midmar Mile: Congratulations goes out to Bianca Hellberg, who took part in the Midmar Mile this weekend. Well done for taking part and completing this race.
