Vryheid High School – Let the sport begin

VHS welcomes Mr B Zondi, originally from Durban. He has been appointed as mentor, facilitator and disciplinary officer who will assist educators and learners with any problems that may arise in the daily running of the school. The past weekend VHS played pre-season winter sport matches against Empangeni High School.
Generally there was a healthy competitive spirit, but it was also obvious that these were ‘first’ matches. Most teams, from both sides, played together for the first time and so lacked the experience to function well as a team. However, good rugby, netball, hockey and even chess were played and the spectators enthusiastically encouraged their teams. Well played all and specifically the hockey boys!
Results: Netball: u/14A 12-4; u/14B 7-6; u/15A 11-17; u/15B 14-2; u/16A 10-17; u/16B 4-8; Second 10-15 and First 20-14. Rugby: u/14A 5-5; u/15A 22-15; u/16A 29-10; Second 0-27 and First 6-8. Girls’ Hockey: u/14 0-0; u/16 3-3; Third 2-1; Second 0-6 and First 2-5. Boys’ Hockey: First 2-0 and Second 4-1. Chess: 4½ – 2½.
Congratulations to the following athletes who qualified on Saturday, February 28, at Ulundi to go through to the Natal Athletics in Durban: Ilse Niebuhr (1st 800m; 1st 400m and 1st Long Jump); Sasja Henning (1st Shot Put and 1st Discus); Melanie Niebuhr (1st High Jump); Gerhard Smit (1st 200m); Savanna Taylor (2nd 800m) and Sandile Xaba (1st 100m and 2nd 200m).
