Russians prey on Predators in Nuva inaugural tourney

The Paradise Grounds’ volleyball courts came alive this weekend with the launch of the Newcastle United Volleyball Association (NUVA).

Signalling the launch, an inaugural tournament was hosted on Saturday.

Teams entered from Newcastle and surrounding towns.

With a league format forming the base of the tournament, participating teams had the chance to play against every team, which led to upsets and total domination in some cases.

The games were played with a three-set total, and the competitiveness from tournament giants, Russians Volleyball Club (VC) was undeniable.

Russians Volleyball Club (VC) managed impressive victories in every game, but came close to losing out to Predators VC during their match-up.

Predators VC have been seen as the dominant force on the volleyball scene since its explosion last year, but Russians VC put the Predators to the sword and came out victorious,

Indians VC finished the tournament in third place, just behind defending champions, Predators VC.

Top honours was claimed by Russians, who have been training hard to become the best in the NUVA setting.

A special mention has to be made to Team Ladies, the only participating women’s team in the tournament.

Team Ladies, while severely outmatched in many cases, still delivered stellar performances, and proved to be an outstanding underdog even as they challenged top teams Russians VC.

Club secretary, Sandile Mabaso said: “It was great having all the teams come out in support of the event. We want the club to grow more, and the sport to become a staple in Newcastle. We will be pushing hard for this; working hard to take our volleyball to the top.”

He thanked the tournament sponsors, Moonlight College Sports Department, Department of Community Services, Allen Street Motors, Tommy’s Auto Parts and NTT GM Newcastle for making the tournament possible.

The NUVA meets for social matches every Monday and Thursday from 6pm and every Sunday afternoon from 4pm.

All interested sport enthusiasts, fans of the game, or a person in search of something new are welcome to join these games, as the games double as training matches.
