In a surprise press briefing this morning, Emnambithi/Ladysmith Mayor Vincent Madadla announced through his spokesperson that Murchison Street will be renamed. “This is in keeping with what we have seen in bigger centres, where old colonial buildings have been renamed and statues removed.” explained a mayoral spokesperson to a joint sitting of the Ladysmith Historical Society and Ratepayers Association.

Along with the renaming of Murchison Street to President Zuma Avenue, the mayor announced that all colonial weapons, including the Long Tom and the famous Castor and Polax cannons, would also be removed.

“Although Ladysmith has a vibrant colonial history, we must not make the mistake of realising how un-African the guns are,” municipal spokesperson Ubulima buka April stated.

This is a fitting day and date to make these forced removals.
