Human Rights Day, which was celebrated on March 21 marks a significant period in South Africa’s history. It marked a day when scores of people were killed and many others injured in what is known as the Sharpeville Massacre.

Black South Africans protested against the dompass laws and it was during this protest that police open fired on the crowd, killing and injuring. Through this bloody and bleak story, a beacon of light shone, it became known as Human Rights Day in South African and declared International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by the United Nations.

It became a day when human rights are celebrated and people are reminded of their rights. This was the case at the Human Rights Day event held at Papkuilsfontein Hall on Friday. Hosted by Operation Sukuma Sakhe Umtshezi Local Task Team, the event set the tone for dialogue and learning as speakers imparted knowledge and motivated all present.

Representatives from various government departments were present to show their support for the event. These included officials from Umtshezi Municipality, departments of Justice, Social Development, Health as well as leaders from the religious sector.

Each official had an opportunity to address the crowd and speak on Human Rights. Powerful, thought-provoking messages were shared, which had the audience declaring their agreement. All that attended also received booklets, detailing Human Rights and other related subjects.
