ACCORDING to a report by Isolezwe in March, the Mayor of AbaQulusi Municipality Patience Khaba admitted that there was a lot of corruption in the municipality and that she was doing all she could to bring it to a halt.
This was the Mayor’s response after she was questioned about a matter regarding a certain Bhekuzulu resident who had come to find that he was illegally registered as a land surveyor working under AbaQulusi Municipality.
This came as a great shock to the resident who was in actual fact unemployed and struggling to make ends meet.
It is alleged that the resident came across this information when he went to pay his electricity bill at the municipality.
The Mayor admitted that she was well aware of the matter and that it had been sorted out.
The resident had reported the matter to the police for investigation.
According to the Mayor, this resident’s details had been mixed up with those of a municipal employee with the same surname.
She went on to say that it was suspected that this municipal employee had used this resident’s details in order to obtain an RDP house.
She also pointed out that this had all happened before she was elected as Mayor of AbaQulusi.
According to a source, who wished to not be named, this is only the tip of the iceberg where corruption in the local municipal department is concerned as it is alleged that during the strike which took place last year names of workers who had passed away years before were read out on the payroll by the magistrate.
