Update: Third suspect in gym owner’s murder appears in court

Drew appeared before the C-court magistrate, where he chose not to apply for bail

Faizel Drew, the third suspect in the murder case of gym owner Mr Uraj ‘Joe’ Ahir, made a brief appearance in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court this morning (Tuesday, May 5).

44-year-old gym owner Mr Ahir was found lying in bed at his home in Oswald Rapson Road on Monday, April 7, last year. A postmortem investigation determined that he had sustained injuries consistent with an assault. A case of murder was opened and an investigation into his death began.

Two suspects were initially arrested, but the third suspect, Faizel Drew, eluded police for some time. Ladysmith detectives managed to trace Drew’s whereabouts and arrest him in Foxburg, Johannesburg, on April 23. He had been on the run since the attack.

Drew appeared before the C-court magistrate today, where he chose not to apply for bail. The case has been remanded to Friday, May 15.
