When justice fails – Attackers set free
“No response was received from Jiyane, and AfriForum will now approach the Cluster Commander for assistance. It is totally unacceptable that dangerous criminals, who were caught red-handed trying to invade a farmer’s property, are released and the charges against them dropped. AfriForum will not rest till we get to the bottom of this matter,” Fourie concluded.
OF THE seven would-be attackers who attempted to invade the farm of Gertman Janse van Rensburg on the morning of August 19, 2014, the six who survived the consequences of their crime were recently released and all charges against them dropped.
According to Chris Fourie, the Provincial Coordinator for AfriForum in KwaZulu-Natal, the local farmers association approached AfriForum for assistance to get answers from the relevant authorities as to why the charges against the seven accused were dropped.
AfriForum wrote to Col RM Jiyane, the Station Commander at SAPS Vryheid, on April 11 requesting him to furnish AfriForum with the reason(s) why the charges against the seven accused were dropped.
“No response was received from Jiyane, and AfriForum will now approach the Cluster Commander for assistance. It is totally unacceptable that dangerous criminals, who were caught red-handed trying to invade a farmer’s property, are released and the charges against them dropped. AfriForum does not only help farmers and communities to set up community safety structures, but will also place the necessary pressure on the relevant authorities to fulfil their mandate.
