New face on the tee box

Starting his golfing career at the age of 10, Barend Wessels is a golfer with 17 years’ experience with a Class A Pro-Golfing Association (PGA) Professional qualification.

He is also the new course manager and on-site professional of Vulintaba Country Estate and Golf Club.

Barend’s experience as a player is truly amazing, as he first started playing as a, ‘scratch golfer’ at the age of 13, playing golf for the first team at Volkrust High School.

His career continued to take flight, and Barend has racked up a number of honours, including winning three Pro Am Tournaments. He was also selected for the South African Student Sports Union (SASSU).

Now Barend is ready to help you improve your game.

“Newcastle is very similar to home for me. I grew up in Volkrust so I know some of the Newcastle faces, and if I don’t know you, I definitely will as we improve your golf.”

Currently, Barend holds the course record at Volkrust Golf Club with a stunning 61, and still considers this to be one of the best rounds he has ever played.

He has a history of teaching professionally, as he was the Senior Pro at Legend Golf and Safari in Limpopo prior to moving to greener pastures closer to home.

“Vulintaba has huge potential. It already ranks among the top 10 nine-hole courses in the country, and will definitely stand a chance to be the best golf course in the country once the next nine holes are completed,” he said.

Golf gives him the chance to completely relax and take full control of everything he is about to do.

“No one can tell you what to do on the golf course.”

He compares golf to life.

“It’s all about making the right choice and sticking with your decision.”
