Mondlo murder suspect opts for suicide

The suspect allegedly hid in a toilet and shot himself while on the run from eMondlo police. He was apprehended and taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his self inflicted wound. An unlicensed firearm was found in his possession.

ACCORDING to a report by The Citizen, a 22 year old man shot himself while trying to evade police capture on Sunday.

On Saturday morning, at approximately 5:00am, eMondlo police received information regarding the whereabouts of three wanted suspects. The suspects were wanted for murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.

In a joint operation by Vryheid Cluster Task Team, Crime Intelligence Unit and eMondlo Police Station members, a suspicious looking motor vehicle with three occupants was spotted at Mkhumbane area in Mondlo. The vehicle was stopped and searched, revealing two unlicensed firearms.

Two of the suspects, aged 21 and 27, were subsequently arrested, while the third suspect escaped and fled the scene on foot. A chase ensued and one police official was wounded when he was shot at by the suspect.

He was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries while the rest of the team continued to pursue the armed suspect. It is believed that a civilian may have been shot and wounded by the fleeing gunman.

The other two suspects were arrested and will be charged for murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The recovered firearms will be sent to ballistic test to determine if they were used in the commission of any other crime in the country. The two suspects will appear in the Nquthu Magistrates’ Court.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said: “Police will thoroughly investigate the case against the suspects and make sure that they are convicted and sentenced. We also wish to extend a speedy recovery to the brave police officer who was injured during the operation.”
