Biker crashes on De Beers Pass

A heavy cross-wind pushed the bike towards the edge of the road and one of the tyres touched gravel...

A 47-year-old biker crashed along De Beers Pass this afternoon (Sunday) while riding with 2 of his friends.

The 3 avid bikers were riding down De Beers Pass when 1 of them allegedly lost control and touched gravel at the edge of the road, causing him to crash into a storm water drain.

According to the other bikers, a heavy cross-wind pushed the bike towards the edge of the road and when one of the tyres touched gravel, it pulled the motorcycle off the road and into a storm water drain. The biker was stuck in a storm water pipe and had to be taken out by paramedics. The bike also landed up in the drain.

The biker was stabilised at the scene by OccuSure Ambulance Services from Ingula, ER24 and Sharaj Ambulance Services, and then transported to hospital to be treated for moderate injuries.

The 3 bikers are from Newcastle and say that De Beers Pass is a well-known route with roads they enjoy riding on.

The 2007 Yamaha R1 Big Bang Edition bike that was involved in the crash was completely written off and was taken away on a bakkie.
