Carina rises to great heights in athletics

For 6 months of the year she is in Europe for training and participates in European races, and the other 6 months are spent here in South Africa

Ladysmith’s very own Carina Horn is taking South Africa by storm with her prodigious talent in the arena of athletics.

Carina was born in Ladysmith in 1989. She went to Haas Das Pre-Primary School and from there to Monument Primary until the middle of Grade 6 (June 2000).

Her mom Annatjie Marais, Carina and her brother Rudie moved to Birchleigh Kempton Park, where Carina completed Grade 12 at Birchleigh Hoërskool in 2007.

She has taken part in various sports since primary school.

In 2000, she participated in the SA Karate Championships (when she was still in Ladysmith). Her sensei was Mr Prinsloo.

Also in 2000, she achieved her national colours for jukskei at the age of 11.

In addition, she tried her hand at athletics, cross-country and hockey at primary school. National colours for hockey followed in 2005. Carina played for the girls’ first team since 2004.

From 2004 to 2007, she showed the boys she could also excel at cricket, being the team captain. She was an excellent all-rounder and fast bowler.

But it is in athletics that her major successes have been achieved. She attended athletics championships from 2002 to 2007.

In 2002, Carina received the ‘Sports Lady’ trophy, 2003 again the ‘Sports Lady’ trophy, 2004 to 2007 Victrix Ludorum for athletics, and provincial colours in 2008.

Carina attended Tuks University and attended the ‘Worlds Students’ in 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia. This is a big competition in the build-up to the Olympics.

In 2012, she received invitations to join clubs in Spain, America and Austria. She joined a club in Austria.

Rainer Schopt from Linz, Austria, is now her coach and Carina trains in Austria for 3 months before returning to SA for 3 months. Carina also trains at Tuks, Pretoria. In other words, for 6 months of the year she is in Europe for training and participates in European races, and the other 6 months are spent in SA.

Carina’s father, Vincent Horn, still resides in Ladysmith, as do her 2 aunts (from her mother’s side). Her aunts are Magda Snyman, who is the branch manager of the Ladysmith post office, and Christa Snyman, who is the branch manager in Estcourt.

Carina’s family and friends are all very proud of her astonishing achievements in sport. Well done, Carina!
