NEWCASTLE played host to Vryheid Rugby Club’s first and second teams on Saturday, July 18, for the final round of matches in the league.

The second team faced Dundee Sentraal in Vryheid’s first match of the day and were off to a good start, dominating the first half of the game.

Injuries to key players in the early stages of the second half appeared to disrupt Vryheid’s momentum, and they fell behind against the Dundee team, who eventually beat Vryheid 26 – 18.

Tries came from Zakes Dlamini (1); Johannes Kruger (1) and Sibonelo Jele (1), with J Barnard placing a penalty kick between the poles.

“It was a great game and I’m proud of my team ending in the finals,” said second team Coach, Carel Burger. “Well done, guys, and thank you for this great season. You have all done me proud.”

Second team Captain, Mornè Els, stated on social media, “Ek wil net dankie se aan ‘n great span van spelers wat ek mee kon speel en lei die jaar. Ouens, dit was lekker om saam met julle die jaar te kon speel. Aan ons afrigter, Carel [Burger], dit was ‘n voorreg om jou te hê as ‘n coach en ‘n pel. Voorspoed vir die toekoms, ouens en hou die Arend hoog.”

Els added, “Dit is nou lekker om my boots op te hang en te sê dit was n voorreg om solank vir Vryheid te kon speel.”

The first team went up against the Highlanders, but the odds were stacked against the Vryheid team and they were unable to achieve victory against the home team, despite their best efforts. Of the tries scored by Vryheid, only four were awarded.

Mornè Ellis; Dylan Herbst; Wessie Van Der Westhuyzen and Danie Rudolph officially scored a try each for Vryheid, with Jandri Barnard and Devin Aspden managing to place the ball between the poles once each, bringing Vryheid’s final score to 24 – 31 in favour of the host team.

“And it’s done!” said first team Captain, Wessie Van Der Westhuyzen on social media.”Die finaal het gekom en gegaan, ons het ons kans verloor. Maar, boys, ek is nogsteeds trots op elke speler. Ons het net te laat wakker geskrik.”

Van Der Westhuyzen , who has led his squad through an impressive 2015 season, always leading by example and never lacking in encouraging words for the team, added, “Dinsdag is ons weer bymekaar en dan is dit weer harde werk vir die groot beker – die Murray Cup.”

“Kom ons staan soos net ons weet hoe. Wys almal waarvan ons gemaak is.” added the Captain. “Aan elke man, vrou en kind wat deel is van ons, sê ek dankie vir die ondersteuning sovêr. Die seisoen is nog nie klaar nie. Love julle, boys… Vryheid, een klap!
