BREAKING NEWS: Attackers ambush smallholding near Vryheid

Sancha commended the swift response of Hlobane SAPS, Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch and Pro5, who arrived at the scene within half an hour, as well as the SAPS Forensic team, although the suspects had fled in the interim.

THREE masked assailants ambushed a smallholding approximately 35km from Vryheid on the Nongoma road this morning, Thursday, July 30.

Sancha Labuschagne was at home on the smallholding, located near the farm where farmer Willem Weites was brutally murdered in 2013, with Olga Nyoga, her domestic worker, when the attack took place.

Sancha believes that the perpetrators took advantage of the loadshedding which occurred the previous evening to settle into their vantage point in an empty cement dam next to the house and plan their attack.

The following morning, between 7:00am and 8:00am, when Sancha and Olga were alone at home, the intruders entered the Labuschagne home, two of them armed with pocket knives, according to Sancha and one armed with a pistol.

The thieves demanded money and weapons. They assaulted Sancha and robbed her of her cellphone. Both women were restrained and locked in the bathroom while the perpetrators proceeded to ransack the house. Unbeknown to the robbers however, Olga had managed to conceal her phone throughout the attack, which enabled the women to contact Mr Labuschagne, who contacted Pro5 and the local authorities.

Sancha commended the swift response of Hlobane SAPS, Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch and Pro5, who arrived at the scene within half an hour, as well as the SAPS Forensic team, although the suspects had fled in the interim.

After her horrific ordeal, Sancha requested that we mention her sincere gratitude to those who assisted, friends and family who supported her following the terrifying experience and to Olga, her domestic worker, who acted so bravely in the face of danger, possibly saving them both from a fate much worse.
