Umzinyathi District Municipality Mayor, Rev James Mthethwa has resigned.
Mthethwa handed in his letter of resignation after coming under huge political pressure from top brass within the ANC.
Recently he was criticised for comments he made about homosexuals which made national news.
He also came under fire from members of the ruling party, when he declared that he was joining the Isikebhe Unit, last year.
Deputy Mayor, Naniwe Madonsela will be standing in for him until a new Mayor is elected.
Regional Chairperson of the ANC, Linda Ngubane is expected to be appointed the new District Mayor.
