Celebrating 40 years of existance

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) will be celebrating its 40th anniversary on November 1.

ISKCON is a monotheistic branch of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition within Hinduism, and its mission is to promote the well-being of society by teaching the science of Krishna consciousness according to Bhagavad-Gita and other ancient scriptures.

Essential practices involve the chanting of God’s holy names, among several processes of devotional service, to bring about lasting happiness and peace in society by reviving a relationship with God.

With this in mind, His Divine Grace, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada arrived in South Africa in October 1975 during the height of the apartheid regime.

The juxtaposition of apartheid, its racial and ethnic segregationist policies and the restlessness of a suppressed people caused the message and teachings of Srila Prabhupada to resonate widely and be felt deeply.

During his tour of South Africa, he spoke at the Great Hall at the University of Witwatersrand on the 23 October 1975.

In commemoration of this, Iskcon Newcastle will be celebrating its anniversary at the ISKCON temple, 20 Toucan Place, commencing at 4pm.

The programme will consist of sweet melodious bhajans and kirtans. Supper will also be served.
