A baby girl, two women and two men were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in plunged down an embankment near Zwelisha, Ntabamhlophe on Sunday afternoon.

An accident report states the vehicle plunged 30 meters down an embankment. KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said that paramedics had to descend the steep embankment to gain access to the people in the vehicle.

This is when they made the tragic discovery that five people had already lost their lives.

“Paramedics treated four patients, who had survived the initial impact of the crash. One patient was in a critical condition, while three patients were in a serious condition. The patients were stabilised at the scene, before being transported to hospital,” said Mr Mckenzie.

The cause of the accident is unknown.
