The official launch of the Newcastle Community Tourism Organisation (CTO) took place last Wednesday at Tramonto Boutique Hotel.
Sibonelo Nzimande, Manager of Tourism, Development and Marketing at the Newcastle Municipality, welcomed guests at the informative event.
Delegates from various bed and breakfast establishments and guest houses in and around Newcastle gathered in anticipation of this exciting venture for Newcastle’s tourism industry.
Mr Nzimande said tourism impacted on the creation of employment and contributed to the national Gross Domestic Product.
“There are strategies in place to support tourism development, as this will provide us with international exposure with other Newcastles of the world, Strategic Executive Directors are looking into marketing bed and breakfasts differently,” he said.
Logistics was the biggest challenge in our town.
“The municipality is working tirelessly to have scheduled flights in and out of Newcastle, which will result in an increase in job opportunities,” he said.
CTO was formed whereby submissions were made from registered bodies involved in accommodation events and who are well-informed with the tourism industry.
Thereafter, a forum was established to select candidates.
In early 2013, this shortlist was submitted to a portfolio committee, and 2015 the executive committee of the CTO was elected.
This committee was approved by Newcastle Municipality.
“The platform is led by credible people,” assured Mr Nzimande.
Johan Pieters, elected chairman, announced the other members of the CTO executive committee.
They are: Sibusiso Mkhulise – Vice-Chairman, Nhlanhla Madonsela – Secretary and Siephan Atterbury, Treasurer.
Six vacancies are reserved for members to be elected on the executive committee. Members who have an up to date membership as well as abiding with by-laws and aligning themselves with the constitution will be considered.
After two years, members will elect a new committee.
Mr Pieters elaborated on the benefits of being a member of the CTO:
– A link from the CTO website to members’ websites will be established.
– Members will receive a certificate of membership to be renewed annually..
– Members will be included in the Newcastles of the world passport.
– The CTO will assist with tourism grading of all guest houses and establishments.
He hinted on hosting a campaign to find the best breakfast in SA in 2016.
Mr Nzimande and Mr Pieters spoke proudly about the tagline of the CTO, Work. Play. Stay.
“Work, because we are a business destination. Play, we provide entertainment for example, our casinos to attract people. Stay, for people to relocate to Newcastle because we are a welcoming community.”
“We look forward to walking this journey with you,” concluded Mr Pieters.
