H.P.S youth committee gives back to the community.

The Hindi Pracharni Sabha (HPS) Youth Committee recently held its first food drive.

Members collected basic food items to prepare food hampers for less fortunate families in the community.

They visited local businesses, the municipality, Newcastle Child Welfare and residents to compile a list of families who were in need of a little Diwali kindness.

Altogether, 40 hampers were put together that included basic items such as sugar, flour, oil, vegetables, rice and canned items.

The hampers were prepared at the HPS on Sunday November 8, whereafter the committee delivered them to families in Fernwood, Paradise and Lennoxton.

“Diwali is a festive time for the Hindu community, and every household prepares sweetmeats for the family and gift sweetmeat hampers for friends and family. However, we are aware that there are many families who do not have the ingredients to prepare a simple meal for their families,” said Naven Singh, a member of HPS executive committee.

Mr Singh was proud to say the event was a monumental success.

“The Executive Committee of HPS would like to congratulate and thank the youth committee on their dedication and hard work,”

Mr Singh said the donation of Diwali hampers would be an annual event.
