Three alleged hitmen accused of murdering Indaka municipal manager Sinatra Khumalo are expected to appear in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday).

The three, aged between 27 and 30, were arrested on Tuesday.

It is unclear at this stage how this impacts on the case, with two suspects already arrested by the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team who made a breakthrough shortly after the shooting.

The two suspects were arrested in the Ladysmith area on Saturday, August 8, and one of them was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol. The recovered firearm has been sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province. The arrested suspects, aged 27 and 33, appeared on August 11 in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court.

53-year-old Sinatra Khumalo, municipal manager of Indaka Municipality, was killed in a hail of bullets in what has been described as an ambush on his way home.

Mr Khumalo was employed at Indaka Municipality in 2002 as the Corporate Service director and in 2012 was appointed in the position of municipal manager. His colleagues say he was a very industrious and intelligent man who had a vision for Indaka.

He was one of the foremen who was actively involved in the integration between Emnambithi and Indaka Municipality.  “This tragic incident is a great loss to the municipality,” said a colleague who asked not to be named.

At the time of the shooting, Mr Khumalo was alone, returning from work, on his way to Ladysmith, driving his white VW Combi when the vehicle was riddled with bullets, killing him instantly.

He is survived by his wife and children.
