Chaos in the Umzinyathi District Municipal council chamber

Meeting adjourned as council turns chaotic

Chaos erupted in the Umzinyathi District Council chambers now when councillors met to officially appoint a new District Mayor.

The previous Mayor, Rev James Mthethwa  resigned from office following a string of controversies.

He was then redeployed to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

The district has been without a Mayor since September.

Minutes into the meeting, the ANC and NFP asked for a 10-minute caucus to prepare for the election.

However, once they returned, all hell broke loose.

One councillor, Emily Molefe of Nquthu,  refused to take her seat, prompting the rest to start disrupting the meeting.

It was then adjourned till further notice.
