No Mayor elected at Umzinyathi

Meeting to elect new Mayor gets disrupted

There was more drama at the Umzinyathi District Council following  a meeting to elect a new mayor.

DA and IFP members walked out of the meeting, claiming that the Speaker had blocked an NFP member from attending.

That meant that the meeting did not have a quorum to procede.

However, Speaker Bongani Chambule, said that he had earlier received a letter from the NFP stating that they had suspended the councillor.

This is the second meeting to elect a new Mayor.

The first meeting ended in chaos when councillor, Emily Molefe of Nquthu,  refused to take her seat, prompting the rest to start disrupting the meeting.

The previous Mayor, Rev James Mthethwa  resigned from office following a string of controversies.
