BirdLife Newcastle takes flight to conserve its species

BirdLife conservation club in Northern Natal recently held its monthly meeting at Newcastle Club on February 15.
Chairman of BirdLife Northern Natal, Theuns Botha welcomed birdwatchers and conservationists and shared his recent sighting of the black-chested snake eagle in Newcastle.
Mark Anderson, CEO of BirdLife South Africa since October 2008, was an esteemed guest speaker at the meeting, and emphasised the importance of conservation of bird life.
Mr Anderson shared the successes the of organisation, such as a securing a habitat 10 years ago for the lesser flamingo species in Kamfers Dam, near Kimberley.
He also referred to challenges the organisation faced, pollution being at the top of the list, followed closely by wind farms posing a threat to slow flying birds.
“We have to do our best in conserving the earth’s wild species of birds,” encouraged Mr Anderson.
