Rotary gives a helping hand
The functional hand was offered to her by the Rotary Club of Dundee.
In 2011 Lindiwe Majola was involved in a taxi accident which resulted in the loss of her left hand and part of the forearm.
Rotarian Tish Coleman heard of her predicament and learned of the hand project at a Rotary Conference in Durban some time ago. Ms Majola could no longer be employed due to the amputation and had indicated her desire to return to her previous cleaning work.
As she has an elbow joint and sufficient forearm, the functional hand was offered to her by the Rotary Club of Dundee.
The hand is an International Rotary project and there is no charge for the hand only transport costs to cover. Ingrid Damman, Occupational Therapist from Pro Nobis, agreed to assist in fitting and training Lindiwe in the use of the hand as seen in the photos. Ms Majola is seen learning to use the hand for different tasks – lighting a match holding the matchbox, sweeping, using a knife and fork.
A second such hand has also been provided for an 18-year-old girl from Nquthu but this is still to be fitted and the training done.
A similar hand for a child could be obtained if required.
The Rotary Club of Dundee will attempt to acquire more such hands so please contact any Rotarian should you know of a person needing such a functional hand.
