GALLERY: Bleeding for a good cause

"Every unit of blood you donate, saves three peoples' lives."

NKZN SANBS held an awards evening at the Pines on March 18.

The purpose of the evening was to congratulate and recognise men and women who are loyal blood donors, and to motivate the community to donate blood.

“Every unit of blood you donate, saves three peoples’ lives,” said marketing manager, Shavani Sewpaul.

Guests were educated on healthy food choices and procedures to follow to become a blood donor. Ms Sewpaul also touched the importance of blood donating and explained how blood had no substitute. She also thanked everyone she called loyal donors, and who never missed the opportunity to donate.

SANBS zone manager, Phelelani Mhkize welcomed guests and handed awards to milestone donors, who had donated fifty or more units of blood.

Donor committee chairperson, James Dlamini spoke on behalf of all donors and said he thought donors played one of the most important roles in SANBS chain, as their blood was used to save lives.

“As a donor we need to feel special and needed when we go to donate our blood. Supporting SANBS is important to me as I know my blood is saving lives. The organisation adds value to our blood, so donate as much as you can and do it unselfishly,” he said.

Shavani Sewpaul concluded the evening with her quirky sense of humour and and thanked donors for their contribution to saving a life.
