48-year-old Richard Vickers was attacked at his house on Tipperery Farm near Rookdale on Saturday evening (March 19) at about 7.45pm. He was shot and killed by two unknown gunmen. 

According to a source close to the incident, Richard and his wife were watching a game of rugby and Richard stepped outside for a cigarette. His wife heard him yell angrily at someone and when she looked out the door, what she saw shocked her. Richard was lying on his stomach on the ground. That’s when two unknown men stormed into the house, grabbing the lady by her arms.

In desperation, she asked them what they had done to her husband, and told them to take what they want and leave. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money.

A man and his friend who were staying in a nearby rondavel had heard the shots and rushed outside. They then heard Richard’s wife yell that her husband had been shot. The brave occupant of the rondavel went back inside to get his firearm, got into his car and chased after the suspects who were on foot.

After firing shots at the two suspects, the robbers started firing back. They ran off the road and into the veld, leaving the brave man no choice but to try and look for help.

Three shells were found at the scene of the crime.

Richard had two bullet wounds to the shoulder. The shots are believed to have entered from the back and the arm. His wife and the residents of the rondavel were not injured during the attack. It is believed that Richard died instantly.

The motive for the incident is not yet clear, and police are investigating a case of murder.
