Spreading autism awareness at Inkanyezi School

Autism Awareness Day was commemorated at Inkanyezi School.
An educator who teaches children with autism outlined the signs that a child could possibly have this condition. She mentioned that it is not wise for autistic children to be in a room with a lot of light, as it could hurt their sensitive eyes. They often have sensitive skin too and thus do not like to be touched.
Some of these children are visually impaired and cannot stand noise.
Mrs Buthelezi, a parent who gave birth to a child with autism, shared her experience of raising her boy to the age of 16, his current age. She said it is of great importance to have patience with these children. You cannot just teach them something once – you have to repeat it over and over again. It can take months for your child to perfect something. The patience must be accompanied by love. It was said that a lot of parents who have children with disabilities do not appreciate them and rather hide them away for their own benefit.
A play was performed by Mfanafuthi Mbokazi – a role-playing play in which awareness was raised on how to identify if your child possibly has autism and how to handle it.
