Embracing the dawn of the impending winter, Newcastillians welcomed the annual Vodacom Winter Festival with open arms, as the winter chills were kept at bay with a vibrant atmosphere surging through the Show Grounds.
From food stalls to curio stalls, the Winter Festival catered for everyone’s shopping delight.
Adding to the festivities, musicians such as Laurika Rauch, Bok van Blerk, Edisontide, Die Heuwels Fantasties, HHP and Kwesta rocked the centre stage and created an electric warmth to the four-day event.
For those wishing to show off their eating abilities, there was the Zama eating competition and the Panarottis Pizza Eating competition.
Amajuba District Mayor, Jabu Khumalo, officially opened the Vodacom Winter Festival on Thursday.
“Projects such as the Vodacom Winter Festival are to be supported as it shows how unified our community truly is, despite the diverse population. The show includes everyone and the organisers did a sterling job in setting it up,” she said.
Quentin Ferreira, of the show committee, extended his thanks to Mayor Khumalo and also thanked sponsors for making the event possible.
“We need to thank Vodacom for all its support, because if it wasn’t for them this event would not have been possible.”
Mr Ferreira further emphasised the purpose of the Winter Festival.
“The main purpose of the Vodacom Winter Festival is to put a smile on people’s faces, both old and young. However, this is not the only purpose, the show also sees money being put back into the community.”
In 2015, the Vodacom Winter Festival committee donated R220 000 to 30 charity organisations in Newcastle.
“We want to give more back to the community this year and we set ourselves a target of R228 000. None of this would be possible without the community’s support and we would like to thank everyone for their support.”
