57-year-old Mrs Lorraine Schirge, the headmistress and founder of Andante Independent School, always makes sure that education is the top priority and that each child receives individual attention.
Mrs Schirge has been blessed with four daughters who are the “apple of her eye”.
She was born in Durban and later moved to Ladysmith.
Mrs Schirge had visual problems as a child and battled with poor eyesight for years. Every day, she prayed that her luck would change and that somehow she would one day enjoy good sight.
Having moved to Ladysmith in 1996, she heard about a good eye specialist whom she decided to visit and see what he had to say about her eyes.
This visit would culminate in lenses being implanted in both eyes, which helped her regain her eyesight.
Ever since, she has had no visual problems whatsoever.
On the other side of the coin, her eye problems made her aware of the problems many children face in their lives on a daily basis.
Children often have learning difficulties, and even bright children sometimes need a little push.
That is when she decided to open up a school which would provide good education and help children with their problems. That school is none other than Andante Independent School, an inclusive mainstream school no matter what race a child is.
Each class at Andante is small, which allows for individual attention.
She established the school in the year 2000 and then handed the school over to a trust in 2003, which made her principal.
Over the years since, Mrs Schirge has created strong bonds between the children and staff at the school.
She is also well-known in the community as a kind and friendly woman.
“I would like to thank the community at large, including my family and friends, for all their love and support,” says this educator with a kind heart and an eye for helping children attain a good education.
