BARRY HERTZOG – Residents have expressed anger and concern, after reports of another play park left in ruins.

Allegedly, the park on the corner of Drakensberg Drive and Allen Street is vandalised, damaged and filthy.
Residents in Barry Hertzog Park claimed the park was unsafe, and they did not allow their children to play there.
“I take my children to the park in town. It is a bit out of my way, but at least its safe there and also clean,” said a resident, known only as Mrs Botha.
She said the park had become a breeding ground for criminals, and residents didn’t feel safe going there any more.“There have been many incidents where residents have been robbed while walking through that park. It’s a disgrace.”
Vehicles regularly entered the park, where occupants would consume alcohol, and indulge in vulgarities, she elaborated.

Allegedly, people were also spotted abusing drugs in the vicinity.
“This park is supposed to be for children to enjoy themselves, not for adults and their tasteless habits!” she exclaimed.
Ward 4 Councillor, Bertie Meiring undertook to inspect the park and have the problem attended to.
“I will revert the issue to relevant people and departments and request them to resolve the concerns of the residents,” he promised.
Residents were also concerned about homeless people sleeping in the park, as it allegedly posed a danger to residents in the area, and may lead to burglaries.
“We don’t know these people or where they are from, but taking residence in our suburban parks is not acceptable and this needs to be dealt with immediately for our own safety and that of our children.”
According to an unofficial source, the municipality was not aware of the presence of the homeless people in the park, but would take the matter up with relevant departments and find a way to deter them. The source also mentioned the municipality had embarked on a project to repair park equipment and clean the grounds on a weekly basis. However, the repairs were proving to be futile, as equipment would simply be damaged again.
“They have reverted to removing severely damaged equipment now, as repairs are exhausting the budget set for parks. There is however a ray of light, as three of Newcastle’s parks are in the pipeline to be upgraded in the coming year.”
The Newcastle Sun attempted to contact the Newcastle Municipality for comment, but failed to receive response at the time of going to print.
