Young ‘hero’ infuses new blood

Just 20 years old, Lorenzo Singh is one of the youngest blood donors at the Ladysmith Blood Donor Clinic at San Marco Centre.

Lorenzo’s friendly smile goes hand-in-hand with a great sense of humour, as he is always cracking jokes and making the staff of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) laugh whenever he makes a turn to donate his precious blood.

On Monday morning, Lorenzo made his seventh blood donation at the centre. He started donating blood when he was only 16 years old and still schooling at Ladysmith Secondary (Lasec).

When asked why he donates, Lorenzo says there is nothing nobler than having the chance to save lives through your selfless actions. He aims to be a more regular blood donor and become another “hero”, as the SANBS staff call all their valued donors.

“I feel that donating blood is the right thing to do and I encourage other youngsters to do the same. You are making an incredible difference by sacrificing a small amount of your time to donate a pint of blood that will not kill you, but is sure to save someone else’s life out there,” says Lorenzo.
