6 tips to keep your child safe during the school holidays

Such as, child proof your home by making sure all dangerous substances and items are out of reach

Vigilance is key to protecting children over the school holidays, and greater awareness of child safety can assist in preventing injuries and accidents.

Our children are currently on holiday and many of us parents are working. Some, of course, are at home.

The question is: Are our kids safe when we are not around?

Here are 6 essential tips to keep your kids safe during the holidays:

1- Child proof your home or the place you are staying by making sure all dangerous substances and items are out of reach. Make sure all electrical wiring is safe and swimming pools are sealed off with a safety fence or safety net, preferably both.

2- Always keep a close eye on your child. Don’t let them wander off on their own or be without the supervision of a responsible adult.

3- Don’t leave children under the supervision of other children.

4- Children who are home alone during school break need to ensure that they keep all doors locked. They need to also be told not to allow anyone to enter the property.

5- A list of important emergency contact details, such as the local SAPS or fire station, should always be kept close to your land-line phone.

6- Linking to point number 3, never leave children in the care of an adult you don’t trust.
