By-elections set to take place on Wednesday
While it is unlikely that the ANC will lose the ward, it will be interesting to see how they perform

In the wake of the brutal and cold-blooded murder of the ANC’s Khanyisile Ngobese-Sibisi, by-elections are set to take place on Wednesday, November 9. Ngobese-Sibisi was a candidate for Ward 20 in the Acaciavale area for the local government elections held in August.
She technically won the August 3 elections with the most votes, but was not around to witness her victory, as she was killed on Mandela Day (July 18).
Ngobese-Sibisi was shot dead at point-blank range as she stopped her car at an intersection. The killing is believed to be politically motivated and linked to in-fighting within the ANC.
The ANC, IFP and DA will be competing, each trying to get the votes needed to secure Ward 20. The community is being given an opportunity to elect a new candidate.
The top three candidates who will be competing for the by-elections are: Thabisile Njoko (ANC), Siphamandla Mduduzi Njoko (IFP) and Sizwe Sithebe (DA).
While it is unlikely that the ANC will lose the ward, it will be interesting to see how they perform post #FeesMustFall protests and the public protector’s report which appears to confirm state capture by big business. Even in some municipalities, rumours of municipal capture have begun to surface…
So, will the ANC win with the very healthy results they had on August 3 of over 53% of the vote, followed by the DA with 26% and the IFP with 8%, or will they have lost some support?
