Stitching together a better future
The ladies began with little or no knowledge of sewing and were guided through the use of the sewing machines, fabric selection and technical aspects surrounding cutting and stitching

The Al-Zahra school of sewing is proud to announce the successful completion of its programme by three students.
Khatija Ayoub, Rabia Samuel and Hajra Mtlabela were recently awarded sewing machines of their own in acknowledgement of their tireless perseverance and success in learning this new skill.
The Al-Zahra school of sewing is a community organisation aimed at empowering women with sewing and design skills in the hope of making them financially independent.
It was established in 2013 with the support of SANZAF, when ladies in the community with an interest in sewing and design were invited to join the school.
The ladies began with little or no knowledge of sewing and were guided through the use of the sewing machines, fabric selection and technical aspects surrounding cutting and stitching.
Today, they proudly display the pillowcases, overalls, cloaks and aprons, among other things, they have created. All the designs showcase their bursting creativity and a professional finish.
“Al-Zahra’s success is a testimony to what community efforts can bring about,” says Fatima Khan, chief instructor of the school. The class is equipped with sewing machines that were sponsored by SANZAF and members of the community, and is resourced with fabrics, trims and other materials that are continuously donated.
Mr Mohammed Moola and Ismail Sardiwalla of SANZAF have repeatedly availed themselves to the school and have contributed to ensuring its success.
The staff and students of Al-Zahra wish to extend their sincere gratitude to them and the Ladysmith community for their support which has been a source of great encouragement for the ladies.
