DURNACOL – The Number 2 dam in Durnacol is now ironically named.
For close to four weeks, sewage from an overflowing outlet poured into a small spruit, which trickled its smelly way into a stream and ultimately the dam.

June Zietsman was one of the residents who reported this problem to the Advertiser.
A frantic Mrs Zietsman said the overflowing of the outlet was a constant problem, adding she had found difficulty getting someone out to rectify the problem.
“I took photographs and phoned around but no one could help.”
The outlet lies within a few metres of a pump station on Durnacol’s Jacaranda Street, although the abundance of overgrowth suggested the station had not been visited for some time.

However, the gate of the station was unlocked at the time.

After a number of calls to various officials linked to water in the area, the Director of Technical Services for the Amajuba District Municipality, Thanda Zulu was reached on Tuesday morning.
He said a team would be dispatched to assess and resolve the problem.
Later in the afternoon, Mr Zulu explained employees were at the site of the overflowing sewage in Durnacol, and discovered the situation to be bigger than they realised.
The problem seemed to indeed stem from the pump station itself.
“It is meant to be cleaned on a regular basis; we will observe if there are any more problems with the pump station. The team is trying to clear away the waste for now.”
