Still loving literature at 98 years old
She is an avid reader and despite her age still devours literature to this day

98-year-old Valerie Salmond is one of the strongest women at Juana Maria Old Age Home.
Valerie was born near Windsburg in the Free State. She has four children, her eldest being 71 years old. She moved to Ladysmith in 1944 and together with her family were dairy farmers in Ladysmith.
One day she was busy on the farm when her dog got hold of her ID documents and ate them up.
She went to the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court to sort it out and that’s when she met her husband, David Salmond. She says it was love at first sight.
Valerie has always enjoyed walking, and was seen every afternoon walking with family and friends. She is also an avid reader and despite her age still devours literature to this day.
Even in her old age, Valerie reads all the books lying on her bedside table.
When she was younger, she was in a gardening club in Ladysmith, taking pride in having a beautiful garden at her home.
Her husband sadly passed away in 1989. “My children are my life and I love them with all my heart.”
Mrs Salmond is one of the many friendly faces at Juana Maria Old Age Home; together with the friendly staff at the home, they are one big happy family!
