THE old Vryheid Rock ‘n Roll band called Rave, and all its now golden-oldie fans, some of them coming from around the country, are set to gather at Cecil Emmett Hall on Saturday, March 11, for what might very well be Rave’s last reunion.
The group had a number of members but then settled down to the now late Carl Foti (guitar), Gordon Knox (drums), Paul Greeff (guitar), and Clive Young (vocals). The surviving members of Rave and the people from Vryheid and district who used to dance and sing along at their gigs, are now mostly in their 60’s and 70’s – greying oldies who remember the “Good ol’ Days” of 1960’s music.
That is what the reunion will be all about, a music-filled night of ‘60’s music in the company of old friends.
Three rugby legends, two of them old Vryheid boys, will be at the event. Legendary Thys Lourens and Toy Dannhauser plus Thys Burger go around the country raising money for charity by auctioning off rugby memorabilia. They will be bringing some of these valuable items with them to auction off at the reunion. Tell your friends who are mad about our national sport, to join the reunion and meet these rugby legends in person.
Thys Lourens, born in Vryheid on May 15, 1943, as well as playing for the Springboks played 168 matches for Northern Transvaal in the Currie Cup competition. He captained the team on 84 occasions. The other Vryheid boy, Toy Dannhauser, played for the Springboks, Natal and Northern Natal and captained Transvaal.
