Going above and beyond at Forderville Library

Reading can help children's personalities develop and it's also a fun way for parents to interact with their children

The Forderville Library has introduced Activity Hour every Saturday at 10am. What started out as story time with Gita Patel is now Activity Hour.

Children can attend with or without their parents. Before the introduction of Activity Hour, just a book or two would be read to the children.

Each book took the children into a different world on various adventurous. This allows them to get creative and use their imagination with the characters and scenes from the settings of the novels.

To help them comprehend what was read; Ms Patel would ask questions and even have the children read to her. As part of the library’s December project, the activity room was was painted with fun colourful murals.

Now during Activity Hour, children not only get to read they also get to make crafts using recycled goods that they collect.

Little patrons impatiently settled for activity hour last Saturday.

The librarians are now looking at beginning a planting project, sewing and even baking. One of the librarians added that more children are visiting the library and borrowing the books that were read to them.

“I am glad that children are getting hooked on books from a young age. What they are learning here in a fun but educational way will help a lot in the classroom,” she added.

Early reading gains children academic excellence, basic speech skills, better communication skills and more logical thinking skills. The children also recite a prayer; practice their ABCs and numbers during Activity Hour.

Reading can help children’s personalities develop and it’s also a fun way for parents to interact with their children. You are encouraged to bring your child or children to attend Activity Hour every Saturday.
