Alfred Street shop razed in blaze

A large section of the shop has been burnt, as well as a large amount of stock

This morning the owner and staff of a small business in Alfred Street were picking up the charred remains left behind after a fire last night.

The acrid smell of burning hangs in their air as staff side-step the puddles of water to remove what is left behind of the Herbal Health Emporium.

Owner, Koomarasen Pillaye, who has owned the shop for 46 years, says that he was at a prayer service last night when he received a dreaded call.

“It was about 7.15pm and I was told that the shop was on fire. When I got here, the fire department and staff were here. The fire department was hosing the place,” recounted Mr Pillaye.

The cause of the fire has not been ascertained and Mr Pillaye said that no electrical appliances had been left on. A large section of the shop has been burnt, as well as a large amount of stock.

Whilst standing amongst the ruins, Mr Pillaye jokes that it was time for the shop to undergo a revamp.
