Awqaf SA is living up to its motto as “empowering communities”.
The month of August heralded the beginning of a mathematics intervention programme in a partnership with the Department of Education and Awqaf SA.
Learners from Ezakheni and central Ladysmith schools converged on the Ezakheni Community Hall and were put through their paces by Mohammed Khota from K@Way. The dynamic instructor began his programme with 445 registered learners on the first day and 458 learners on the second day.
The two-day programme was aimed at equipping learners and educators with effective tools to implement in their revision programme for mathematics.
Awqaf SA, which has been in existence for the last 16 years, arose out of the desire to revive the institution of waqf (a form of charity) espoused by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
It has successfully used this waqf system to empower both Muslims and non-Muslims with a range of programmes consisting of cataract operations, computer laboratories, care giving, education and many more.
Awqaf SA’s relationship with K@Ways began in 2015 and currently provides tuition for 100 learners on a monthly basis from Grade 10 to 12.
The instructor, Mohammad Khota, in his career as mathematics instructor, has effectively engaged thousands of learners extending from Gauteng to Cape Town.
Learner responses at the end of this two-day session held in Ladysmith were very positive.
Responses were “amazing”, “very informative”, “dynamic” and “very helpful at this time of the year”.
Since the programme mainly targeted learners encountering problems in pure maths, many learners enquired why the session was not open to all. It is apparent that there is a dire need for programmes of this nature.
Learners can look forward to the next session to be held in October.
