Finding acceptance in society is often a daunting challenge, especially when you are considered different or disabled.
Esperanza Special Needs School held a gospel concert in order to raise awareness.
The school has 45 learners with a variety of disabilities.
These range from autism, cerebral palsy, hearing impediments, speech impediments and behavioural problems, to muscular disorders.
“The gospel concert was to raise much needed funds for the school. But, more importantly to act as an awareness campaign about acceptance of the children. In the end, every child needs to be accepted for who they are,” said Esperanza Principal, Jennifer Pillay. Themed Music Meets Needs, the gospel concert had 10 churches supporting the initiative.
Each church performed songs or dances, which carried a message of love and support.
The evening was made more special by the fact that learners from the school participated in the event.
“This is the first time our children took part in a fund-raiser.”
Children opened the concert by modelling and dancing.
Pillay said she was happy with the immense support shown by the community.
