BREAKING NEWS: Farm attacker sentenced for Van Rooyen massacre

Billy van Rooyen and Ronnie Lombard were brutally gunned down last year in a ruthless farm attack. Today, on November 1, 2017, one year, six months and thirteen days later, one of the savages responsible for their murder was sentenced in the Madadeni High Court for his crime.

AS the country came together on #BlackMonday earlier this week to stand united against farm attacks, one killer was having his day in court for his part in the savage farm attack on the Van Rooyen family home on April 19, 2016.

BREAKING NEWS: Two killed in farm attack

Thulani Hlonipani Sibiya appeared at the Madadeni High Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to seven charges against him for his part in the massacre that shook Vryheid last year and robbed, not only a family of their husband, father, son and brother but also stripped an entire community of a pillar of strength who had gained the respect of the locals through his kindness and community spirit.

Ronnie Lombard and his son-in-law, Billy van Rooyen, in happier times before their family was struck by this senseless tragedy.

One year on – #VryheidFarmAttack victims remembered

Farm attacker and convicted murderer, Thulani Hlonipani Sibiya was sentenced as follows:

  • For each of the murder counts of Billy van Rooyen and Ronnie Lombard, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
  • Fifteen years imprisonment on the count of armed robbery.
  • Ten years imprisonment for the attempted murder of Lodewyk van Rooyen Snr.
  • Five years imprisonment for the attempted murder of Karlien van Rooyen, the spouse of the deceased, Billy van Rooyen.
  • Five years imprisonment each for two counts of kidnapping.

Sibiya’s total sentence amounts to two life sentences with an additional forty years imprisonment to be served concurrently.

Farmers laid to rest – A community mourns

The trial of the remaining six accused, who will remain in custody, was adjourned to April 14, 2018 to May 18, 2018 and will take place at the Madadeni High Court.
