Smooth sailing for Endumeni schools
Members of the Endumeni Municipal Operation Sukuma Sakhe, led by Councillor Xaba of Ward 4, visited schools around Dundee.
Endumeni Municipality welcomed the 2018 academic year with school visits from Councillor Melusi Xaba in the hopes of improving the quality of basic education.
Although late registration normally causes a disturbance, that was not the case this year and learners had a productive day one at school.
Members of the Endumeni Municipal Operation Sukuma Sakhe, led by Councillor Xaba of Ward 4, visited schools around Dundee. They checked the state of readiness during the first day of the 2018 academic year. “This programme provides much-needed support for local schools and learners that have family challenges and we also addressed late registration at public schools,” explained Cllr Xaba, “We managed to visit the following schools: Thangeni Combined, Thalana High, and Thalana Primary as part of government support and as role players in the education system of our children”. He added that “we believe that attending to the needs of our learners at primary and high school levels can yield the results. We don’t want to be seen as inspectors of poor performances, but rather as stakeholders who support the education department in achieving excellent results during this academic year.”
Parents were pleased to know that on the first day, educators were teaching with no disturbances. Although late registration occurred on the first day, this did not disturb classes. Bongani Shangase, school principal of Livangeli Primary, cited that “the department has granted time for late registration and the schools have adhered to that”. He also raised concerns about parents not supporting their children regarding their academics. Mr Shangase pleaded with parents to take part in their education and show interest in their future.
Cllr Xaba concluded by congratulating the schools for the excellent results they produced for the class of 2017 and commended the leadership of the schools for ensuring that they were ready to teach.
