Ten Vryheid hockey players selected for NKZN team
Proud Club Captain, Leeroy Holmes, said Vryheid hasn’t had this many members selected for the Northern KZN team in a long time.
TEN members of the Vryheid Hockey Club were selected to represent Northern KZN in the Quadrangular Tournament against Zululand, Midlands and Southern Coastals next month.
The selection took place at the Northern Natal hockey trials which was played at St Dominic’s in Newcastle over the weekend.
Members that made the Northern KZN Ladies A-side are Kayla High and Cheray Becker. Playing in the Northern KZN Ladies B-side are Natasha Holmes, Nicea Strydom, Saskia Hibbert, Ané Bure and Chloé Henstock.
Leeroy Holmes will be playing on the Northern KZN Men’s A-side. Mark Hein and Karl-Johann Ewert were selected to play in the Northern KZN B-side.
Cameron Boock, also a member of the Vryheid Hockey Club, was selected to umpire in the Quadrangular Tournament.

Proud Club Captain, Leeroy Holmes, said Vryheid hasn’t had this many members selected for the Northern KZN team in a long time.
“I am proud of everyone who made it. Just keep your heads down, play and listen. We all have the potential to play better. If we continue to improve our game, I am hoping to see members of Vryheid Hockey Club being selected to compete in the South African Country Districts Tournament. I know we can do it if we just keep performing, and if we keep our composure on the field,” said Mr Holmes.
Mr Holmes (28) has been playing hockey for the past 23 years, and is currently the oldest member of the Hockey Club.
“My first coach was my mum who was a former Junior Springbok hockey player,” he explained.
“I encourage residents of Vryheid to join the Hockey Club. Not only is it a great way to get to know other people in the community in a social and fun environment, it is a great way to keep fit that doesn’t even feel like exercise. For me, it is also a means to work off frustration. It is a good stress-reliever. Hockey teaches you self-discipline, communication skills and vigilance, all skills you can apply in other areas of your life. The Club strives to make a positive difference in the community. We get involved in as many charity events as we can,” said Mr Holmes.
