Ntabamhlophe’s Isibani Sezwe fair well at Isicathamiya festival

Isibani Sezwe entered the open category and out of 100 scored 74 for their performance

The annual Isicathamiya Competition hosted by Durban’s Playhouse Company took place on Saturday through to Sunday, March 17 and 18.

Estcourt’s Isibani Sezwe entered and fared very well. Isibani Sezwe sing Isicathamiya (Zulu a capella), they are made up of 13 men aged between 30 and 45 and come from KwaNdaba in Ntabamhlophe.

On March 17 the group set off to the Durban Playhouse Opera Theatre to represent Uthukela district and compete at the 2018 Playhouse Isicathamiya Competition. The competition had three categories: Top 20, Standard and Open. Isibani Sezwe entered the open category and out of 100 scored 74 for their performance.

“I would like to express my jubilation, mostly for the commitment shown by the members on stage,” expressed the group convener, Amos Choncho.

The group’s performance is set to appear on television on the Ugubhu Lwami show and feature on Durban Playhouse Opera Theatre’s Instagram page.

Isibani Sezwe is currently grooming three aspiring Isicathamiya artists. On behalf of the group Mr Choncho would like to convey gratitude to the District Organisers, Nr M Nsunthsa along with his Deputy, Mr Zulu (Mageba).

“Big thank you to the uThukela District officials, Department of Arts and Culture and the Playhouse Company who assisted in provided us with transport,” he thanked further.
