NJR Steel brings out the best in our local ladies… and some men too…

Giving our young ladies a chance to show their singing talent

The NJR Steel Women’s Day celebration at the Boulevard Centre on Saturday was a chance for local ladies to showcase their singing talent in an open mic contest.

Arranged by Odette Layton and her team – all sporting pink-sprayed hair to mark the occasion – from NJR Steel, the day was enthusiastically welcomed with Glencoe’s own, Christo Badenhorst, an employee of NJR, warming the morning up with some rousing Neil Diamond and Steve Hofmeyr songs.

Casey Vilakazi, also of NJR Steel, was the men’s representative, singing a song dedicated to his child.  Then it was over to the brave young ladies who volunteered to sing in public. With the judges (that included the Courier’s Vanessa and Jade) listening intently, it was a hard decision.

In the end, Thandeka Sikhakhane was selected as Open Mic winner. For NJR this was a great day involving the community in a spirited day aimed at bringing people together.

Second place went to Cheree Ollewagen
