New generation of women urged to be as strong as those of past generations

The event was attended by mainly elderly women from throughout Glencoe and one or two supportive men!

Women’s Month was marked in Glencoe with speeches by Ward 7 Councillor, Dr Sandy Bedassi, and Speaker Bongiwe Mbatha-Makathini, who both urged today’s women to show courage and be strong in the midst of unrivalled abuse and violence.

Dr Bedassi said it was the wives of indentured Indian coal miners and railway workers in Northern Natal in the early 1900s who led the resistance discriminatory laws against Indians. He called on the women of today to the same courage as those women – many of whom were poorly educated – by helping to root out the cycle of violence that is destroying South African society.
