Driver flees after bus carrying children crashes

Children were treated for slight injuries

A bus carrying school children is to be checked for road worthiness this morning after the vehicle crashed and it was found that the license disk had expired in February.

The driver fled the scene on the R602 near the Wasbank/By Products turn off after the vehicle went out of control and hit a tree. The bus was carrying around 50 children to various schools in Dundee from the Wasbank area.

Ambulances were dispatched to the scene and the children, most suffering cuts and bruises, were admitted to Dundee Hospital. Some suffered broken limbs and will have to transferred to Madadeni and other hospitals.

The Mercedes bus, with a NDE registration, will be towed to the testing station in Dundee. The matter is being investigated by the Wasbank SAPS.
