PHOTO GALLERY: Successful Spring Tournament unmarred by extreme weather
The tournament was a huge success with 24 teams of 4 players.
The Vryheid Bowling Club Annual Spring Tournament was held the previous weekend. The tournament was a huge success with 24 teams of 4 players competing from Richards Bay, Empangeni, St Lucia, Durban, Dundee, Newcastle, Eshowe, Benoni and Vryheid . The competition was extremely keen with quality bowls being played.
Unlike the previous year when the tournament was held in perfect Spring weather, this year we had to deal with the unseasonal inclement weather. After severe storms on Friday, about 15mm of rain and the weather forecast of 100% rain for Saturday, it seemed very possible that, after the months of hard work preparing the greens and the grounds, that the games would be washed out. However, we were so blessed as all three games were completed on Saturday. The second game of the morning just finished as the rain started falling and, during the lunch break, the heavens opened up with a heavy downpour and plenty of small hail covered the greens. What perfect timing as the sun emerged after lunch and the final game of the day was completed on very wet greens.
Saturday evening, after a delicious meal, the bar hummed with entertainment provided by a band from Newcastle, made up of the bowlers, Monty and Douglas Steele and Fritz Botha.

On Sunday, the sun shone brightly as we completed the very successful tournament, but the temperature had dropped back to single figures with an icy wind blowing. After our enjoyable breakfast, ‘A Spider’ was played, competing for a bottle of whiskey and R1033 was raised in aid of our local Hospice. Thank you to all the players for their generosity.
Congratulations to the Vryheid team that were the overall winners. The results of the tournament were as follows: Winners from the Vryheid Bowling Club: Phillip Scheepers, Soon Moolman, John Cross and Nolan Malan. Second from Newcastle Bowling Club: Ron and Alice Howell, Vicky and Adrian van der Merwe. Third from Newcastle Bowling Club: The Steele Family, Monty and Michelle, Douglas and Lindsay .
